A gloomy Sunday in Philly, where I had plans to binge watch the next recommended series on Netflix but I didn’t, had to literally fight with my meticulous instincts that ended up pushing myself successfully out the door to go for a run. Only little did I know what was in store for me.
While running on the sidewalk, got startled by a dog heading towards me from it’s backyard and within seconds I could see my ankle swollen up like a tennis ball with a pain that didn’t allow me to move for sometime, until I called my hubby and we rushed to the urgent care. This happened last October after which I got a boot to wear with strict instructions from my orthopedist to avoid running for a couple of months. For me it felt like I couldn’t breathe properly with the anxiousness of not being able to run again for the rest of my life.I don’t know why but the thought had started to hinder my sleep too. Until finally this year in Jan 2020, that day had arrived when I was able to run a mile non-stop with the same pace as before. That memory will remain embedded as an unforgettable moment of my life, where drops of tears trickled down, as I ran and kept murmuring to myself this is the day for which I have been living each day for the past 3 months. It’s been close to 6 years I have been addicted to running and found out that there is a striking similarity of running to the way we live our lives, and while I am at it let me just walk you through 5 of them that I think are the closest. FOCUS : The most important thing while running is your focus on your end goal.Be it a specific distance like 3 miles , or a mere destination like a tree, end of the road , or a bridge at the end of a sidewalk. The key component here is nothing can change your focus to reach that goal, which is very similar to the goals we set in our lives, and most importantly to have that clarity in focusing on that end goal, no matter what. TIME & DISTANCE : Timing and distance of your run usually measures the impact of your pace over time. The question that you always need to ask, Is it increasing or is it decreasing ? Similarly with experiences over time one can measure an individual’s growth like whether you are growing gradually or at a slower pace than usual. That’s when you try to add breathing techniques, timing your intervals, water intake to tackle the hurdles impacting performance similarly you plan your life and add techniques that you learn from your experiences.
